I’ve been using Twitter for a number of years now, and much like any social media platform, it has its positives and negatives. One of the big pushes in education is the adoption of new technology to further the learning experience. This infographic gives a brief summary of Twitter, its user base, two cases studies, and best practices for educational purposes.
Overall, I really like the layout and design of this graphic, but I wish the information would have gone a bit more in depth and would have given more examples. The design could have been re-done to condense some of the information and use a little less white space and slightly smaller type.
While I find social media to be a great platform for learning, content creation and aggregation, not everyone buys into the social media appeal, nor should they be required to create an account in order to supplement their education. The exception to this, of course, is a class that’s focused on online marketing and communication principles. The infographic’s pre-health professional case study is great, but when I look at the average GPA score, it’s still below impressive (assuming the GPA score is on a 4.0 scale). I guess my concern is that a number of students that are not social or tech savvy would be deterred and turned off by the education provided in the class and wouldn’t benefit from the use of social media at all. This opinion, though, does not include services such as Desire to Learn (D2L) and Blackboard.
